1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant – Year 1

\n

Hours: 8:45am – 3:15pm daily (30-minute lunch break)

\n

We are seeking an experienced and dedicated 1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant to support a Year 1 pupil with additional needs on a full-time basis.

\n

About the Child

\n

The pupil:

\n
    \n
  • Has a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
  • \n
  • Is non-verbal and communicates through alternative methods and behaviours.
  • \n
  • Frequently moves between activities without sustained engagement or meaningful interaction.
  • \n
  • Has a strong fascination with water and requires close supervision to ensure safety and maintain focus on learning activities.
  • \n
\n

Key Responsibilities

\n
    \n
  • Provide dedicated 1:1 support throughout the school day.
  • \n
  • Encourage engagement in learning activities and support the development of attention and concentration skills.
  • \n
  • Use appropriate communication strategies, including visual supports and other ASD-friendly approaches.
  • \n
  • Support the child's social, emotional, and behavioural development.
  • \n
  • Implement guidance from the class teacher, SENCO, and external professionals.
  • \n
  • Closely monitor and manage transitions between activities and learning environments.
  • \n
  • Ensure the child's safety and wellbeing at all times.
  • \n
  • Record observations and provide feedback on progress and behaviour as required.
  • \n

Essential Requirements

\n
    \n
  • Previous experience supporting children with ASD and complex communication needs.
  • \n
  • Understanding of strategies to support non-verbal children.
  • \n
  • Strong behaviour management and de-escalation skills.
  • \n
  • Patient, resilient, and proactive approach.
  • \n
  • Ability to build positive relationships and maintain consistent boundaries.
  • \n
  • Comfortable working independently while also collaborating effectively with school staff.
  • \n
\n

We are looking for a strong, experienced SEN TA who can provide consistent support, remain calm and adaptable, and help the child access learning while meeting their individual communication, sensory, and behavioural needs.
